Learning to drive with a learning disability
My daughter is almost to the age of getting her driver’s permit. She needs to read the drivers manual and take a test - that’s it! Sounds easy huh? Well, not when you have a disability! Reading informational text can be so difficult for a child with learning disabilities.
She is really worried about it.
She works with a SLP everyday at school. They work on basic language skills, her homework, learning to take tests, and so on. They have also began to work on the drivers manual information! Everyday, they discuss 2 - 3 typical questions you might see on the drivers test. They look at the question and decide “what are they asking?”, they also try to uncover any “trick” questions. These skills also help her on other tests in school.
At home, 2 -3 times per week I try to sit with her to read the manual together. It’s kind of funny actually, because as she reads the information, I have her pause, I rephrase what she just read, then I act it out! I pretend I am driving a car and act out what she just read about. So she is receiving the information many times and ways. She reads it, I rephrase it, then she physically sees it - so she can picture it in her head.
I’ll keep you posted on how this progresses….. Wish us luck!
